A learning portal for sight loss awareness
RNIB wanted the public and its corporate partners to understand sight loss, and to know what to do differently. That called for a learning platform anyone could use, with short, practical modules that turn awareness into action and accessibility built in from the first screen. It builds on four years of work together, including the social action quiz that now sits inside the platform.
We designed and built the RNIB Learning Portal, a learning management system with four modules: living independently, how small everyday actions create or remove barriers, how to offer assistance, and how sight loss is experienced. Each one mixes film, quizzes and hands-on tasks, from a matching game about everyday tools to a sight simulator that compares 20/20 vision with glaucoma, macular degeneration, cataracts and diabetic retinopathy, with an accessibility mode on every activity.
Points, levels, an anonymised leaderboard and shareable certificates keep people learning, and a digital pledge wall turns what they've learned into commitments. We tested the portal with RNIB's user panels and refined it from their feedback, then built a secure back end on AWS. RNIB's strategy team has signed it off ahead of a pilot launch.
“We had a look at the content you shared and we all agree, it is looking really good. It looks clean, professional, engaging and on-brand!”Lisa Hughes, RNIB
